The emission system on the 81Z consists of a smog pump
with an air injection diverter valve mounted to the smog pump. The air from the pump is transferred through
hoses to the air injection manifold mounted on each head of the engine. Another steel tube is routed to
the catalytic converter from the smog pump. This steel line is chrome plated and injects air directly into
the catalytic converter. Many of the utility components on the 1981
Z28 originally came with an unpainted shell. For example, the smog pump came without paint. It is very hard to
find one that has not been painted black because once they are rebuilt the rebuilder always seems to have a can of black
paint handy. I have been lucky enough to find a couple of NOS smog pumps which are original and correct.
The one in the photo above is original to the car and has not been modified in any way.
