Distributor:  The 81Z came equipped with the first of its kind distributor.  It was the first one used without a vacuum advance on it.  GM continued to use it through the 81-89, but it was date coded to the year in which it came on the car.  The 81 had the 81 code, 82 had 82 codes and so on.  This makes it extremely hard to find an original 81Z distributor.  The distributor also came with a wire keeper on top of the distributor as shown in the picture.  The original part number for the distributor is 1103443.  Date code will be: first number will represent the year as 1 in the 1981, the second will be a letter representing the month A-M, last number is date of year and will be the day.  Example: 1C30  that’s 1 for 1981, C for third month (March), and 30 for the 30^th day. It is very rare to find a 1981 Z28 Camaro with an original and correctly date-coded distributor, as most of them were replaced at some point in time with no concern regarding originality or restoration perfection.
